University of Rwanda Charts Phase 2 of e-Learning Initiative

The University of Rwanda (UR) , in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and Arizona State University, is hosting a two-day workshop aimed at shaping the roadmap for Phase 2 of the e-Learning Initiative. The initiative seeks to advance inclusive, high-quality e-learning that enables all students to access education from wherever they are. Phase 2 will build upon the foundation laid during Phase 1, which began in 2023 and is scheduled to conclude in 2026.

While officially opening the workshop, Dr. Raymond Ndikumana, Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Strategic Planning and Administration at the University of Rwanda emphasized that UR must become a technology-driven university by leveraging our existing infrastructure to make e-learning a reality across all campuses.

Dr. Ndikumana further noted that leadership and institutional culture will play a critical role in fostering the adoption of technology to improve academic delivery.
“We must now scale up our efforts and expand digital access to ensure that every student benefits from this transformation,” he said.

The ongoing Phase 1 of the e-Learning Initiative has already recirded important key achievements that inckude increased leadership commitment to e-learning, the growing adoption of digital learning platforms, the establishment of strong co-creation processes and international partnerships for digital transformation, and an increaded students awareness and engagement with e-learning systems.

“These accomplishments provide a strong foundation for Phase 2 as the University continues to transform teaching and learning through technology” said Dr. Ndikumana.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including senior leaders from the University of Rwanda, college principals, representatives from the Mastercard Foundation and Arizona State University, delegates from the University of Toronto and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), stakeholders from the education sector in Rwanda, lecturers, ICT specialists, e-learning officers and student representatives.
