Students and staff from the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus, joined residents of Huye District in Mukura Sector for the commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, specifically dedicated to honoring the memory of women and children who lost their lives during the Genocide.
Speaking during the event, the Mayor of Huye District, Mr. Ange Sebutege, emphasized that remembrance is a collective responsibility.
“Today, we honor the memory of the women and children who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This remembrance reminds us of our collective responsibility to reflect on the suffering they endured and to ensure that genocide never happens again,” he said.
Addressing young people, the Mayor encouraged them to embrace the opportunities available to them, especially in education, and contribute positively to the country’s development.
“Today, we have education for all in Rwanda. I encourage young people to take full advantage of the opportunities available, avoid divisionism, and play a leading role in building a brighter future and a better Rwanda,” he added.
The Guest of Honor, Assoc. Prof. Anne Marie Kagwesage, Chairperson of the Huye District Council, called upon participants to draw lessons from Rwanda’s history and fight genocide ideology.
“This is a moment to reflect deeply on our history and learn from it. The Genocide against the Tutsi was planned, and we all share the responsibility to fight genocide ideology and ensure that it never happens again,” she said.
Demonstrating the Program’s core value of giving back to communities, Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Rwanda, Huye Campus, visited and inaugurated a renovated house for a woman survivor of the Genocide against the Tutsi whose home had been severely damaged. The renovation was carried out as part of community outreach efforts aimed at supporting Genocide survivors and promoting their dignity and well-being.
