In a move to foster an inclusive academic environment, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda has provided essential assistive resources to Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Rwanda with disabilities. The support was also extended to other students at the University of Rwanda with disabilities who have high needs.
The provision of these assistive resources aims to enhance the learning experiences of Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the university of Rwanda and other university students, promote inclusion, expand access to educational opportunities, and empower them to lead independent and fulfilling lives. The Program has also supported the upgrading of the University of Rwanda’s resource rooms by providing assistive materials tailored for persons with disabilities.
The resources provided include various mobility aids, vision aids, and health-related
tools. Notable items include electronic and manual wheelchairs, crutches, and other mobility tools, which significantly improve physical accessibility on campus. Additional resources, such as braillers, white canes, and acoustic hoods, have been supplied to support students with visual impairments. Furthermore, asthma inhaler machines have been provided to assist university students, including Mastercard Foundation Scholars, with respiratory conditions.
“I’m so excited to receive my electronic wheelchair! I can’t find enough words to express my feelings, but I thank you so much for this incredible support. I hope this tool will help me in academics as well as in other important aspects of my life,” said Godfrey Rukimbira, one of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Rwanda who received an electronic wheelchair.“The new wheelchair has made it much easier for me to move around campus. I used to depend on others for every movement, but now I can move independently.
This sense of autonomy gives me the confidence to engage more in class and campus life,” he added. In line with the program’s design, 10% of Mastercard Foundation Scholars at the University of Rwanda must be youth with disabilities. By providing these assistive resources, the program ensures their needs are met across all campuses, fostering an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
