The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda is a 10-year partnership (2021-2031) between the University of Rwanda and the Mastercard Foundation that aims to develop the next generation of transformative leaders by enabling highly talented, service-oriented young people, primarily young Africans, to pursue higher education and cultivate their leadership potential.
Through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, Mastercard Foundation Scholars are provided with inclusive and relevant education, and support to transition smoothly into dignified and fulfilling work to lead transformative lives.
The program mission is to cultivate ethical and transformative leaders who will drive societal change and spearhead the transformation agenda of the African continent. Through the program, scholars are empowered to nurture and maximize their academic potential, leading to a more dignified human experience and improved employment opportunities. From 2021 to 2031, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at University of Rwanda will admit 1,200 scholars. The diverse group will include 70% females, 25% refugees and displaced youth from conflict-affected regions, 10% individuals with disabilities.
In line with program commitment to fostering innovation and addressing critical needs, 80% of the scholars pursue programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Of the total scholars, 90% will be enrolled in undergraduate programs, while the remaining 10% will pursue master’s degree program. Among them, 85% will be Rwandans and 15% International.
